After a long time off, I've finally managed to do some carving. This is the first thing I've done using mallet and gouges, and was intended as a bit of a trial run. I've seen a few Kuksa online, which are Scandinavian drinking cups, so I decided to have a go at one of those. I've been seasoning a few cherry logs for a couple of years, so I split one down the middle and had a go. Most of the work was done using No. 9 and No. 3 1/2 inch gouges, but I did a little shaping with Surforms and a spokeshave, finishing off with cabinet scrapers and sandpaper. After three coats of oil and a coat of wax I ended up with a small Kuksa. The cherry came up very nicely, although there were a couple of small splits due to my inexperience with seasoning the logs.
